This week’s hidden Gift Card deal in the toy department is for a FREE $5 Gift Card when you buy (1) select Hexbug Toy. The prices on qualifying toys start at $18.99 for the HexBug Spiral Starter set, so $13.99 after Gift Card. Deal is thru 12/24 and in store only.

There are other sets on sale that prompt the Gift Card that go up in price from there. There is one set that is a Target Exclusive- the Hexbug Nano Raceway- originally $39.99 but on sale for $29.99 plus get a $5 Gift card back so like saving $15 after sale & Gift Card. There were also Hexbug Spiders, Inchworms and a few other sets included in the deal too.

I have seen these toys for a long time now and have always been curious about them. If anyone has any experience with them I would love to hear your opinions.

  1. Hola! My son loves the NANOS- they are fun toys! the only downside is the batteries which go pretty quickly but I guess you have to expect that with a battery operated toy that moves around soo much.
    Thanks for the heads up!

My kids (DS7 and DD5) got the hexbug nanos last year as stocking stuffers. If you have any sort of ‘bug phobia’ you may not want to buy these because, IMO, they really do look like little cockroaches scurrying around! If you can get over that, then they are pretty cool. My DS got the ‘hive’ for his birthday this year and had fun setting up a race track inside that (it comes with pins and turnstiles you can place wherever you want in the ‘hive’ so the bugs go around or through them). I’m guessing a little guy like yours would love them! Thanks for the tip on the gift card deal. I might look into this to keep in the “toy stash” for next year (kids already have way too many presents for this year…I need to stop going to Target!!).

They really are fun to watch. My boys love them. They are very small so if stepped on can break pretty easy. The batteries do run out fast.

I saw your question on the Hex bugs and just had to share. Personally, I thought the Hex bugs were incredibly lame. Really? a “bug” that looks more like a computer chip and just shakes? how boring. But my son has been begging for one so I thought, being the brilliant person that I am, I will get him this sale Hex bug at 5.00 and then he will discover how lame it is and not want a big set for Christmas. Can you see it coming? Yep, major backfire. He LOVED it. He makes lego mazes for it and houses etc. My spouse, who I thought for sure would also think this was one of the lamest toys EVER, would shoot down a Hex bug set for Christmas. NO, he comes in “Where did you get that? that is so cool.” So yes, I caved, there is one set wrapped under the tree, even though I still think this is one of the lamest toys ever,EVER, EVER.

good info ladies. glad you posted, because my son would love one too. i do have a bit of a bug phobia and i have refused to let him get a lego spider before, so that would definitely still be out, but other bugs i can handle… i think. what kind of batteries do they take so that maybe i can grab some while im out. im sure it says on the package but if anyone can say before hand then i could be more prepared. thanks!

  6. Stacy says:

I thought the same thing! How much fun would it be to watch a tiny computer chip scurry around? Funny that not only do my boys (ages 6 & 8) love them, I do too! It is a hoot to see them race all around. However, my boys make tracks and house out of legos as well, and have just set aside the “hex” race track and starter house. So I would just buy the bugs and for-go all the extras 🙂

I had a HEXBUG house party and they are such a huge hit! Target sells 2-packs of the batteries for $4, they are right there by the HEXBUGS in the toy aisle. I think I read somewhere about Amazon having the batteries cheaper but I haven’t looked into it.

Target also has the Christmas themed hexbugs in the stocking stuffer section… great if you can find them after Christmas on clearance….

Ehh… I bought one for my son maybe a year ago. I’ve never seen him play with it. He is 10 years old now, so maybe they are more interesting for younger children?

  9. Katie says:

This is a great deal on a fabulous toy. My boys love creating mazes for their bugs. My daughter got a pink one last year and I grabbed some for the stockings this year too. They get lost easily and batteries die quick, but I’ve been trying to teach them to turn them off when finished playing and put them back in their tubes for cleanup. We have a few “habitats”, but my boys play with them with their legos, train tracks, or anything they can build for it. Definitly a fun toy for the 8yr and under crowd.

  10. Leigh says:

I LOVE these “bugs”. We purchased one to entertain my two year old when we were at a restaurant. We put it on a side plate and it runs around and he is fascinated. Obviously we don’t let him play with these unsupervised yet but they work well for us and I carry them in the diaper bag when we go out.

Thanks everyone for your comments! It sounds like something AUstin would like- especially building his own stuff for it!

  12. Laurie says:

Thanks so much for this! I returned the 3 spiders that I bought and the nano bugs I got as stocking stuffers. Here is the deal and a few points:
The spiders have been reduced by $2.00 plus it states you get a $5.00 gift card for each one. I had to rebuy each one seperately to get a $5.00 gift card for each. When I tried to purchase all 3 together it only gave me one gift card.

I also bought a 5 pack on nano’s for $19.99 and that also gave me a $5.00 gift card. I returned the 3 that I got for $4.99 each and got a better deal for esentially the same price.

Good luck to all you nano parents out there!

Just to add: Radio shack has the original Hive set marked $19.99. I used a $5.00 off $20.00 purchase coupon I got in the mail. It ended up taken of $10.00! So I only payed $10.99 for the set. Not sure if it was a God thing or a coupon thing…probably a bit of both 😉

was wondering if i took in my reciept for a hexbug spider i bought last week if they would give me the sale price plus gift card as part of the price adjustment thing of i would have to return and buy again?

  14. Shan says:

I lived in Arizona and had HUGE aversion to these!!!!!!!!!…at first.Originally, I told my boys that if they tried to “surprise” me or if I stepped on one, or ANYTHING of that nature, I would toss it…NO SECOND CHANCES. It took about a month but they are so cool! I got over it!That was two yrs ago. My boys now7 and 9 build and rebuild their hex’forts’, they add legos, they built a ski jump from the bunk bed, they put rubberballs in the track for the bugs to push. They love them! They are so excited to (hopefully)get the glo in the dark set from Santa. I have grown to love these little bugs. I totally recommend them! However I put my foot down when it comes to the new LARVA. NO WAY!!

  15. Colleen says:

I just got them this year, so no opinions yet, but I got a killer deal on replacement batteries on eBay.

  16. barbara says:

I got a 2 pk of these the other day on Amazon for $5.99

  17. Laurie says:

To Cupcake: I returned the Hexbugs I purchased prior to the sale. Then repurchased to get the deal. They will not price adjust the gift receipt.

  18. Laurie says:

I meant to say they will not price adjust to the gift card amount or price adjust and give you a gift card. Hope that makes sense.
